Why bother reading in community?

Years ago, my music teacher once told me that patience and diligence went hand in hand when seeking to learn something and being able to integrate it into your playing.

It’s easy to have the desire to play an instrument great. It’s a lot harder to cultivate habits and disciplines that nurture our growth. 

This applies to every sphere of life. We are limited people. Limited to a specific time and place in history. We all get the same 24 hours a day.

If our pace in life is (or feels) hurried we find that to-do lists and the tasks needed to keep our households in order (whether single or married) take precedence over applying what we’ve read.

That idea from that book you just read resonated deep within you. It spoke to your need to be more present to your family, it gave voice to the need for you to lead yourself better before you take a turn for the worst in your finances, or your friendships. 

But life happens. Bills have to get paid. You feel you fell behind at work so you continue the usual trade-off. Work first…invest in your future self later.

I’ve felt like this too. As if there was always something else to do. Who has time to accept Christ’s invitations to becoming a transforming self when our workload and personal ambitions are so great. Or, if I’m honest, when Netflix calls.

I’m not here to demonize work. I love to invest time into work that I’m passionate about. I’m curious. I love ideation and learning. 

But what I’ve found is that if I don’t invest in myself through learning and cultivating community. When I don’t put into practice what I’ve learned, I am like a tree not planted by streams of water. I give fruit. But only in 1 season. I am dry and brittle the rest of the time.  If I don’t invest in myself, I am not good and present to my wife. I am not fully present with my kids. And if that’s my priority in life, then I am certainly no good to anyone else.

I think we are invited by God to flourish in our lives. And by flourish I do not mean that everything in life will be sweet and all experiences will be wonderful. Rather, we flourish when we cultivate a relationship with God, an awareness of how He is at work within us and through us in the world.

How we’ll cultivate this in our little corner on the internet is by entering into a journey together, in community.

And when we read books, “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy [in these books, we’ll] think about such things.” And we will put them into practice.”

We’ll read.

We’ll apply.

We’ll seek.

And the infinite God we serve will meet us in our finite lives and do what God does best. He will continue a good work in us, through us, for the world.

The kind of books we’ll read.

The Legacy Plus One book club will be reading books that are centered on self-leadership and Christian spiritual formation. One of the areas the books on spiritual formation will focus on is embracing rhythms of contemplative Christian spirituality into our lives. 

We focus on Christian spiritual formation because transformation is only possible through the work of the Holy Spirit.

We focus on self-leadership because we are no good to anyone else unless we become aware of who we are and how to lead ourselves well. 

The self-leadership books we read may be written from a secular context. The goal of the application guide we provide you with is to help you adapt the ideas and see them through a Christian worldview.

One of my goals is to make this book club crowdsourced. In other words, I want to poll the community so we vote on future books we’ll read.

A monthly zoom live discussion. 

There’s no better way to cultivate applying what you read than discussing a book in real time with a community.

We’ll use the Socratic method during the live discussions to help us engage the reading of the month. In short, questions are more important than answers.

You should definitely read books on your own. 

The added benefit of joining the book club is gaining insights from community members. 

Reading in community opens you up to insights, discoveries, and perspectives that you would not have otherwise been exposed to.

The book club is an investment in your future self. Being a part of a community provides an internal awareness of accountability.

You won’t receive physical copies of the book. This allows you to purchase the book in your desired format and keeps the cost of the membership community low.

Every month we’ll send you an application guide of the book we are currently reading. The guide will help facilitate your learning and application of the book.

You can cancel at anytime. 

We recommend you cancel at least 1 day prior to your renewal date so you are not charged because we don’t provide partial month refunds.
